ANZROC Newsletter Mailed to Mem-
bers
A number of our members do not have access to an
email address and so ANZROC uses a specialist
company to print, envelope and post the newsletter
to them. Processing newsletters in this way has be-
come increasingly difficult and costly, placing a heavy
financial burden upon your club.
We appeal to you to provide the email address of a
relative or friend who can receive ANZROC com-
munications on your behalf. Please ask your relative
or friend to email your name to edi-
tor@anzroc.com.au and we will update your records
ensuring the link to access the newsletter is sent to
their email address in the future.
If you have no other option than to receive the
newsletter in the mail ANZROC will make every
effort to continue providing this service to you while
we can.
Please contact Paul Tovey on 0411 156 877 if
you have any questions.
Thank you for your help and understanding.

SPRUZEN G.J. (GRAHAM) 92 YEARS 26/08/2023
Carolyn Knight, daughter of our ANZROC Honorary Member Graham Spruzen advised of his
passing on 26/08/2023 at the age of 92.
Carolyn said “He was a Swannies /Bloods supporter all his life He played with them in the under
17s on the MCG. He did relief management through the countryside of Victoria and I think his last
posting would have been in Gippsland possibly Korumburra. Graham retired to Wonthaggi.”
STEVENS W.E. J. (BILL) 83 YEARS 20/12/2023
Hartley Hodgson advised that ANZROC Honorary Member Bill Stevens passed away shortly after
attending our Christmas lunch. Hartley said Bill’s passing was a great shock to the family.
Neil Martin phoning in from Nagambie said “I worked with Bill Stevens in ESANDA for more
than 20 years in the 80’s and 90’s particularly in the motor car dealerships that we considered the
backbone of ESANDA. We dealt with some of the largest dealerships in Melbourne and country
Victoria that included Reg Hunt and Geoff Brady. Two words best describe Bill in my view “Loyal
and True”. He was a great bloke to work with and we remained firm friends after leaving the
ANZ. Bill and Hartley Hodgson would make the trip to Nagambie annually to enjoy my and wife
Merrilyn’s hospitality at the Lake at Nagambie. Vale Bill.”
Dick Sanders emailed “Sad news. I knew Bill from my earliest days in OZ when sharing a room with him in Haw-
thorn Rd, Caulfield. We often played tennis at a court across the Park at a house on the other side. This would
have been in 1959 and we kept in touch but played in different teams. He was generally the stronger player but oc-
casionally I got lucky. When going to the Australian Open one year at Kooyong I saw Bill umpiring a line in one of
the matches - he must have spotted me in the crowd as he gave me a wave. I now return his wave, happy memo-
ries “
The ANZROC tribute to Bill Stevens on our Face Book page had a big impact, attracting over 1000 views,

WESTON OAM B.G. (BARRY) 91 YEARS 30/11/2023
Mary Weston daughter of our ANZROC Honorary Member Barry Weston advised the
passing of her father on 30/11/2023. Mary said “I worked at Control Risks with Dad for a
few years before he left, it was always interesting. I think Dad was very proud of the
work he did at ANZ, as well as finding some great mates there”
Bob and Helen Lyon emailed “Helen and I were close friends of Barry and his wife
Margaret. I knew that he had not been well in recent months. He was not up to visitors
and when I last spoke to him by phone before Christmas, I recall he told me that he and
Margaret had moved to an aged care facility in Brighton.
I was involved in Barry's recruitment as General Manager Security under Will Bailey. Bar-
ry had a long career in security and ran Alan Bond’s security when he won the America's
Cup. Barry had a global network which often proved useful and he was involved in sorting out ANZ Grindlay’s big
stock broking issue in the 80s.
He was a larger than life figure, very smart and great company. He was a strong family man and at 91 led a full life.
Sincere condolences to Marg and his extended family.
TRIBUTES TO PAST ANZ COLLEAGUES KNOWN TO MEMBERS
BELLI FLAVIO (FLAV) Deceased 27/01/2024
A tribute in the Herald Sun 30/01/2024 advise the passing of Flavio at 87 years.
Eamon Veaney found the following article in the Herald Sun dated June 1990 that an-
nounced” Flav Belli, Deputy Auditor General for Victoria joins ANZ as Group General
Manager , Audit, replacing Brian Waldron who was retiring.”
Dan Kirtley attended Flav's funeral and reported “Vale - Flavio (Flav) Belli (PSM) - Flav
Belli’s funeral was held on 8 February 2024 at the Boyd Chapel at Springvale Cemetery. Fla-
v’s widow, Barb welcomed the large congregation and created an atmosphere of celebration
as did his son Stephen, daughter Susan and his grandchildren Jesse and Charlize. Flav was
appointed Group Chief Auditor at ANZ in 1990 following a lifetime career with the Victori-
an Auditor General’s Department where he culminated his career as Deputy Auditor Gen-
eral. His Public Service Medal reflects the high esteem in which he was held and his career
involved a number of high public profile issues. At ANZ he succeeded former Group Chief
Internal Auditor Brian Waldron (dec’d) who had been his boss at the Auditor General’s Department. Several for-
mer ANZ internal audit members were present at the funeral including Michael Kane and Gary Towers. Michael
spoke about Flav’s career paying homage to his leadership and ability to handle challenging situations. Flav will be
missed.
Many ANZROC members would remember Flav.
GILL BALDEEP SINGH Deceased 6/12/2023
Bob Lyon emailed “I attended the funeral of Baldeep Gill. He passed away from a heart attack on 6 December
while on his way to a board meeting of APT Travel where he had recently been appointed. Baldeep was well
known, well liked and respected by many people at ANZ. He was only 58 years old.
Baldeep was a member of my Strategic Planning group and took part in several acquisitions of Pacific banks. He was
very smart and after he left ANZ, he was picked by Amazon and sent to Seattle for 3 years. He leaves a wife, Mel
and 3 adult children.”

PAWSEY MAURICE Deceased 30/12/2023
Cathy Pawsey daughter of Maurice emailed “Maurice (Maurie) Pawsey started work at Bank of
Australasia at 394 Collins St Melbourne in January 1945 at age 16 as a Junior Clerk. He spent 9
very happy years at 394 Collins Street, learning various roles, until being moved for 5 years to
General Manager`s Office, Chief Accountant`s Office, with insights into international and higher
levels of banking, then Staff Branch and Superannuation. In 1958 to Flinders Way Branch, with
Manager Frank Hall, a great mentor. In 1961, to Accountant Richmond, one of the largest Subur-
ban Branches. Maurie would frequently talk about playing basketball for the ANZ team and week-
ends in Wagga Wagga playing basketball, golf and tennis, staying involved even after he had left
the bank. In 1964, Maurie left the bank and moved to a role at Melbourne University, eventually
ending up as Deputy Vice Principal (property) until his retirement in 1990. He, and wife Marida, retired to the Al-
exandra region where he lived until his death on 30 December 2023.
John Inglis emailed “Maurie is fondly remembered by all surviving ANZ Bank Basketball club members.
Please also advise his family that I received the honour of being made custodian of the club's founders'
plate which was presented to the club on its 25
th
anniversary in 1972 by Maurie and 3 other founding
members. RIP you legend.”
Maurie would be known to members who played in the sporting teams of ANZ and attended the Wagga
Wagga weekend all those years ago.

Russell Appleton emailed “Hi Anita, many thanks to you and the committee for the card, it is very much appre-
ciated. The past twelve months seem to have flown by, sadly we are pretty much house bound, my wife Bev has
MND which is progressing slowly and being nonverbal it can be difficult. Sometimes it seems like we are tripping
over Carers and medical equipment. I know why Neale Daniher calls MND ‘The Beast’. My Parkinson's has re-
sponded well to medication, I take 23 medications a day, and thank God there has not been a problem. Mum and
Dad's heavy smoking in my younger days has gifted me CPOD, Emphysema.
Bev and I met in 1966 when we both worked for the E S & A Bank. We just missed each other at Footscray Ni-
cholson and Droop Streets Drive in branch, but were introduced by another Scotty, Alistair Smith, that was 58
years, two children and 5 houses ago. During my time with the Bank I worked in many branches, I worked with
many wonderful people, a lot of happy memories resulted.
Last month I went to Moonee Ponds branch to deposit a cheque, the "machine" rejected it. A young lady ap-
peared out of nowhere and the "machine" swallowed it. I don't go to the Bank anymore, it terrifies me. Again
Anita, thank you”
Wayne Bevan emailed “Thanks Anita. I truly appreciate ANZROC Birthday wishes. Time does march on very
quickly and in my opinion each day is a great day.”
Kevin Chard mailed “Much appreciated Anita, now 83”
Graeme Croxford wrote “Not a lot happening in my life these days but I try to stay on my feet and not be-
come a hermit. I still have 8 vehicles including several sports cars, a BMW and Austin Healey, plus a Bentley for
touring around the district, but I am downsizing now as the future is unpredictable. Thanks to Eamon and all the
workers as it’s nice to get my card on time. Wishing you all the best for the coming festive season and beyond.”
Bill Davies emailed “Anita, Thanks for my birthday message. Hope that 2024 is a happy and healthy year for all
ANZROC members”
Tyrone de Silva emailed “Thank you very much for the birthday wishes Anita.”
Bob English emailed
Anita, belated thanks for my birthday wishes. All the best for 2024.
Saul Eslake emailed “Anita, Thank you very much for those birthday wishes. I’m still greatly enjoying being back
in Tasmania. I’ve made some contact with the Tasmanian branch of ANZROC although I haven’t been able to get
to many of their events over the past year or so. I do enjoy seeing news from people I used to work with when I
was at ANZ in Melbourne 1995-2009.”
Max Fisher wrote “Greetings and best wishes for 2024. Please convey to our President and Committee mem-
bers my appreciation for their season and birthday well-wishing cards. The regular newsletters are always an inter-
esting read. Judy and I are each living at a slower pace. Judy is now in Residential Aged Care.”
Bob Flinn emailed “Thanks to Anita for the usual timely receipt of best wishes for my 85th birthday. It was nice
to meet her for the first time at the Xmas function. Familiar faces continue to dwindle but fortunately we can
still complete a full table for the Xmas function. In June I finally decided to sell the family home in Blackburn and
move to the Bedford Heights Retirement Village in Box Hill. Other ANZ former staff also reside or work there.
The residents are very friendly and there was no problem settling in. I would like to extend to all retired officers
and their families a happy and safe new year.
Ray Gill phoned “Thank Eamon for my birthday card with good wishes that arrived the day before which was
perfect timing for me and was greatly appreciated.
Richard Guminski emailed “Anita, apologies for the tardy reply. Thank you and the rest of the crew for the kind
thoughts and best wishes. Hope you all had a great Christmas and have even a better New Year.”
Neville Harvey emailed “Thank you Anita and team. All good here in Marshall (Geelong). Had the kids and
Grandies around yesterday and a quiet one today - probably roped in to watching the Super Bowl with the son in
law, but only as a precursor to the real sports of AFL and Supercars kicking off shortly! “
Elaine Haw emailed “Many thanks Anita for the birthday card. Hoping to make it to a lunch early next year.
John Hawkins emailed “I would like to thank you for your best wishes. We have a hectic year ahead of us, just
did a quick cruise to Adelaide and next week it’s off around New Zealand on the Queen Elizabeth. We have 5
more cruises to come this year and will let you know details later.”

Darrell Hodges emailed “Hi Anita, Thanks for my birthday wishes. Last year I missed out as I think Ken volun-
teered me as a test guinea pig for the electronic versions (ah, the days of system testing!). Been a while since I
was a regular at ANZROC meetings. Covid put a stop to that and, since, I have lost enthusiasm to jump on a city
train. However, I enjoy the newsletters (revamped very nicely) and am thrilled to see so many of my ex-work
mates emerging into retirement. It is especially great to see the number of ladies joining ANZROC.
Though I spent most of my ANZ life in Vic, I started in QLD. As part of my work I visited all state sites often.
Hence I take delight in reading the other state newsletters now attached and remembering faces past.
Hartley Hodgson emailed “Thanks very much Anita. It’s amazing how the years fly by and you realise that some
of your colleagues are unwell or have passed. I organise a bimonthly luncheon with my Esanda colleagues and
when I started the gatherings we had 10-12 people and now we are down to 6-7. It makes you enjoy every day as
you don’t know what is around the corner. Look forward to catching up at a few ANZROC lunches at the Wil-
liam Angliss School during the year.”
Bruce Iddles wrote “Thank you Eamon and the ANZROC Committee for birthday wishes on 21
st
January (79
years). The past year has travelled by fast. Had 2 grandchildren married in the year- one on the Gold Coast and
the other in Bali. Chemotherapy treatment and maintenance all now completed. Spent 3 weeks in hospital with
Covid and pneumonia-in ICU. All on the mend now. My wife Faye had her two knees replaced and is going well-
she is back playing bowls.”
David Jones emailed “Thank you Anita. Another fast paced year around the sun! Congratulations to the
ANZROC team for last month’s Xmas luncheon – it was a great reunion as always and exceptionally well organ-
ised.”
Kevin Kelly emailed “Thanks for your card Anita and your best wishes. I have retained fairly good health, alt-
hough age is catching up. My large family keeps me under control- or at least they do their best- and I have still a
good deal of sporting involvement, per medium of the grandkids. Go bombers and I have a GWS interest, per
medium of a grandson. Regards.”
Dan Kirtley emailed “Hi Anita, Many thanks for the birthday wishes. The ANZROC birthday email can always
be relied upon and I genuinely look forward to receiving it. Many thanks to you and all on the Committee for
your ongoing service, particularly the annual lunch which was very enjoyable again and provides an invaluable link
to the good old days. Merry Christmas and best wishes,”
Brian Knowles emailed “Thank you Anita. Still able to enjoy a good lifestyle, just dialled down the physical capa-
bility. New great granddaughter due in a few days. No complaints. Happy new year to everybody.”
Graham Mancer emailed “Hi Anita. Thank you for the Birthday Wishes which arrived on time. The monthly
Newsletter and the annual Birthday wishes are my key means of keeping in touch with ANZ. I have now been
“retired” for 27 years almost as long as the 32 years I worked with ANZ. So much has changed with ANZ since I
joined ANZ in Shepparton almost 60 years ago! All the very best for the New Year - May 2024 be a good one.”
Kevin May emailed “Many thanks for the birthday wishes, we continue to live the quiet "ex covid" lifestyle and
overseas travel is now off the agenda. All in all grateful to be here, and enjoying the simple things previously taken
for granted. Wishing all members peace and good health in 2024.”
Jock McGregor emailed Thank you Anita and the Committee for the birthday card, very
much appreciated. Vicki and I are now well settled in Queensland and enjoying life. We
are both reasonably fit and well; Vicki now recovered from her injuries followed an ac-
cident here at home. She forgot she wasnt as young as she once was when deciding to
jump off a retaining wall and smashed her hip and broke her leg. Its been a fairly long
recovery but all is good now.
We had a great Christmas and New Year with both Ross (from Port Hedland WA) and Megan
(from Atlanta Georgia) being home with us. First time all together for 10 years! Thank
you again ANZROC for the birthday wishes.
Phi Nguyen emailed “Dear Anita and ANZROC committee, Thank you so much for the ebirthday card. As al-
ways, it’s lovely to receive the card for my Birthday. Keep up the good work! I’m lucky to have a Birthday on Aus-
tralia Day, especially when I was still working, having a day off for my Birthday was great. Thanks and Kind Re-
gards,”
Gaye Reynolds emailed “Thank you Anta for your kind Birthday wishes.”
Peter Richardson emailed “Dear Anita, Many thanks to you and all at ANZROC for your recent Birthday wish-

Past President John Stevens emailed “Thanks Anita for your best wishes on my birthday - very much appreciat-
ed. I was trying to remember the names of the Branch Managers at Branches where I worked in the early part of
my career. I stand to be corrected but here goes - Ararat Branch 1960 R. G. Sutherland, Clunes Branch Mr Con-
sidine, Horsham Branch Mr Anselmi, Portland Branch Mr Whitelaw, Stawell Branch 1961 Mr Christensen, Niddrie
Branch 1962 Clarrie Holland, Castlemaine Branch 1965 S Raggett / D Alvey, Kyabram Branch 1966 Norm Farmer,
Wangaratta Branch 1968 G Lyons / D Alvey, 39 ESM 1970 Mr Hicks, 351 CSM 1971 Roger Brunskill / John Keck. I
have very fond memories of these people, the Branches, the workmates and that past gone era!
Louise Tregurtha emailed “Hi Anita, Thanks to ANZROC for the card this year. Good thing it came electroni-
cally as I was overseas enjoying a weekend at a castle in Thun Switzerland but not enjoying the -5 degree weather
that went with it! After a visit with family in Basel and a side trip to Zurich we came home via Vietnam to enjoy the
sights and ease ourselves back into the warmer weather. We resolved to spend more time in Vietnam in future
and add a side trip to Cambodia next trip. As usual, it was great to catch up with ‘old’ friends at the Xmas lunch so
thanks to all those who do the organising and I look forward to another great year.”
Russel van Rooyen emailed “Thank you Anita.
Another year and trying to make the most of the blessings I enjoy
with my family and friends.”
Rose Virgona wrote “Dear Eamon, thank you for your kind Birthday wishes on the occasion of my 70
th
birthday.
I had a most enjoyable day shared with my family and friends. Thank you again to the ANZROC team who arrange
the Birthday greetings and well wishes to you all. You do a great job.”
Julie Walker emailedGood morning I would just like to say thank you for my e birthday
card. It is very kind of you. Every birthday is important but this one 70 seems extra
special.
Athol Watkins emailed “Thanks Eamon for reminding me I am not getting any younger. Starting to feel the ef-
fects of health problems but cannot really complain. Have had to cut back on bowls engagements but still able to
keep in touch with old mates I made over the years. Best wishes to all and hope 2024 is a good one.”
Roger Watkins wrote “Dear Committee, I want to thank you for the amazing job you do throughout the year
and for our annual Christmas luncheon. I will be 93 next June and apart from my impaired vision my general health
is very good. I still mow lawns and shop across the road and attend RSL functions and other group events. Best
wishes to you all for the festive season and for good health in the years to come.”
Mike Watts emailed “" Many thanks to Anita and the ANZROC Committee for my birthday wishes. Past 12
months have been somewhat busy recovering from surgery early last year and numerous interstate visits since to
catch up with family including 6 of my 9 Grandchildren, 2 of whom now reside in Chile. Look forward to the
monthly newsletter but also sorry to see the loss of former colleagues. Best wishes to all and stay safe."
Glenda White emailed “Thank you so much from all at ANZROC. I really appreciate the thoughts and best wish-
es from all. A trying year this year, with a health scare, more back surgery and an angiogram yesterday. Just hap-
py to be able to celebrate another birthday.”
Julie Wilkins emailed
Hello Ron, My goodness where is January going already. Hope you are all ok and l,
like so many others look forward to a good 2024. I'm an apology for lunches up to July. I’m keeping my
little part time job and wouldn't be able to get to lunch venues. Plus I travel by tram when I head to town,
there is always a hold up along the way. Again, keep up the good Retired Officers Club work, it takes a
huge team to keep going.”
Keith Winckles emailed Many thanks to Anita and the Committee for the electronic birth-
day card for my 85
th
Birthday. Had an enjoyable family dinner at my daughters with all
family in attendance.
Just getting over surgery to clean up and remove a cyst from my lower spine which was
preventing me from walking. Hopefully I will be back walking 10,000 Steps a day soon. My
days of travelling both in Australia and Overseas are just about over as I am no longer
able to drive as my eyesight is now below that required to legally drive a car. Apart
from that life is good.
Keith Witney emailedMany thanks Anita for the birthday greetings from ANZROC. It’s a commendable thing that
you do.”
Brian Wrigley emailed “Thanks very much Anita for my card, we are looking forward to a good 2024.”

MANSFIELD SOJOURN - MONDAY FEBRUARY 26th TO WEDNESDAY 28th 2024
Over many years a group of ANZROC members and partners have been making an
annual visit to Mansfield. The 2024 visit will take place from Monday, February 26th
to Wednesday, February 28th. This is an invitation for other ANZROC members to
join us.
The Alzburg Resort https://alzburg.com.au is our base for the three days and pro-
vides a variety of accommodation including apartments to share. For the first time
last year six couples stayed in their caravans at the nearby High Country Caravan
Park https://highcountryholidaypark.com.au .
The “official" Sojourn goes over three days but a number of people extend their stay to enjoy the Mansfield area.
(A visit to a local winery this year was very enjoyable.) For the core three days the format is along the following
lines -
Monday.
Arrive from midday, you may be able to check in prior to 14:00, but not guaranteed. Explore the resort and Mans-
field Township at your leisure.
Enjoy Social Golf, Tennis or relax around the pool.
Get together for “Fivesies” at Alzburg Resort followed by a BBQ. BYO food and drinks.
Tuesday.
8am golf game at the picturesque Mansfield Golf Club https://mansfieldgolfclub.com.au
For those not playing golf, maybe a pancake breakfast followed by a drive into the High Country or a stroll around
town.
Enjoy the facilities of the Resort, including the pool.
Dinner will be held at a nearby hotel in Mansfield and will feature the famous trivia quiz.
Wednesday.
Check out of your accommodation by 10.00am but continue to enjoy the facilities at the Alzburg for as long as you
like.
Please register your interest with John Inglis (bjjminglis@hotmail.com or on 0416 048 407) as soon as possible.
Once we have sufficient numbers, attendees will be asked to make their own accommodation arrangements.
We hope to see you in Mansfield!
